LOOKBOOK | The "Duterte shirt"

Doing Duterte's fist sign that was a hallmark of his campaign.

Call this my tribute of sorts to our new president, Rodrigo R. Duterte, who was officially sworn into office today at exactly 12 noon in accordance with the Constitution. I may not agree with him on a lot of things but, like it or not, he is our president. I'm only hoping that God or the powers that be guide him as he leads the country toward realizing that genuine change he has promised during his campaign.

Much has been said about Duterte's fashion sense, or lack thereof. He definitely is no Trudeau in terms of style and he couldn't care less about how he looks. He is often seen wearing slightly baggy pants and of course, his trademark short-sleeved checkered shirt, which I'm totally embracing today. Yeah, you can call it plaid or whatever but in this part of the world, it's also fondly called the "Duterte shirt" by some.

Duterte has this well-observed mannerism where he constantly rubs his his right jaw with the palm of his right hand, sometimes gradually dropping a few fingers until they rest on his chin.

Okay, this is not a Duterte pose.

So how do you style it without looking like your dad or grandpa (no offense meant there)? Or is it less offensive to ask, how do you style it without looking old or dated? Okay, maybe, how do you style it to look updated and hip?

There are a lot of ways, actually. The fact that checkered shirts are fairly easy to find in any store tells us something. Here I paired the checkered shirt with pants cuffed in joggers style. It's tapered but still has enough room around the thighs, which perfectly suits my current medical-related requirements. The olive green color looks just fine with the red shirt, but without me looking like Christmas.

For footwear I played with a two-tone brown pair. It's all about experimenting to see what works. Besides, the red soles tie in with the shirt's color.

Another Duterte mannerism: placing his hands in his pockets.

Best of luck to Duterte and the rest of the Philippines!
